Frederiksø
Island Small Danish island in the Ertholmene archipelago
One of the Ertholmene islets east of Bornholm, Frederiksø draws boat visitors for its 17th-18th-century fortifications, narrow cobbled lanes, seabird colonies and small fishing harbours.
Frederiksø is one of the principal islets of the Ertholmene archipelago off the northeast coast of the Danish island of Bornholm. It forms part of the small, fortified island group that is locally administered as Christiansø.
The Ertholmene islands were fortified and settled in the 17th century to protect Danish waters and shipping; the buildings and fortifications visible today reflect those military and maritime roles. The islands have remained sparsely populated and preserve many historic structures.
Frederiksø lies in the Baltic Sea off eastern Bornholm and is reached by boat from Bornholm towns; it is part of a tiny island community separated from Denmark’s main islands by open sea.
- Access: Access to the Ertholmene islands, including this islet, is by boat; scheduled summer ferries run from Bornholm towns such as Gudhjem and Svaneke.
How to Get to Frederiksø #
Ertholmene islands are typically reached by boat from Gudhjem or Allinge on Bornholm during the summer season; local ferries or private charters are the usual options. Check seasonal schedules in advance.
