Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape
Historical Site Historic meatpacking industrial complex, UNESCO World Heritage
Along the Río Uruguay, Fray Bentos preserves the Anglo meatpacking complex and industrial infrastructure; the site offers museum tours explaining 19th-20th-century meat processing and labour history.
The Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape is the preserved riverside site of large-scale meat-processing works on the Uruguay River at Fray Bentos. The complex includes factory halls, storage buildings, chimneys and associated worker housing that together document the industrial-scale production of meat extract and canned meat for export.
The site played a key role in the international meat trade from the late 19th century through much of the 20th century, with major companies operating large processing lines and shipping finished goods across global markets. Much of the factory infrastructure remains and has been adapted for interpretation, with museum displays explaining production methods and social history.
The industrial complex sits on the riverfront opposite the Argentine shore and forms a compact industrial townscape reflecting the technological and social organisation of a single-export industry.
- Industrial significance: Formerly home to major meat-processing operations including the Liebig Extract of Meat Company and Anglo operations, the complex illustrates large-scale food industrialisation for export markets.
What to See #
- Factory complex (Frigorífico Anglo / Liebig): The riverside factory complex that produced meat extract and canned meat for export, composed of large industrial halls, storage buildings and a prominent chimney stack.
- Worker housing and social facilities: Associated worker housing and company-built social infrastructure that formed a compact industrial town adjacent to the factory site.
- Museum and interpretation zones: On-site museum installations within the preserved factory structures that interpret the site's industrial processes and global trade links.

Tips for Visiting Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape #
- Book a visit that includes the Frigorífico Anglo museum and guided tour of the plant interior - the guided walks explain the industrial processes and are scheduled, so check opening times in advance.
- Aim for a weekday morning to avoid local weekend visitors and to have better access to interior spaces that can be restricted during events or on busy days.
- After the factory visit, walk the workers' housing blocks and the riverfront docks nearby - they provide context on the site's social history and are often overlooked by visitors who focus only on the main plant.
