Church Gothic church on Nuremberg's main market square
A Gothic church on Nuremberg’s Hauptmarkt, notable for its 14th‑century facade and the mechanical Männleinlaufen clock that performs at noon. Tourists combine a visit with the market and medieval town centre.
The Frauenkirche in Nuremberg is a 14th century Gothic church on the city’s Hauptmarkt, commissioned by Emperor Charles IV and built in the mid-1300s (construction begun 1352). It is one of the principal churches in Nuremberg’s old town and a prominent feature of the market square.
The west façade faces the Hauptmarkt and includes a balcony and an ornate exterior typical of late medieval city churches. A mechanical clock called the Männleinlaufen performs a short automated procession at noon each day, which draws regular crowds. The square in front of the church is also the center for the city’s large Christmas market each December.
Built by order of Emperor Charles IV in the mid-14th century to serve as an imperial oratory and market church, the Frauenkirche served civic and liturgical functions for centuries. The building suffered heavy damage in World War II and was restored in the postwar period to repair wartime destruction and conserve historic features.
The church stands on the Hauptmarkt in Nuremberg’s Altstadt (old town), immediately adjacent to the market square and within walking distance of Nuremberg Castle and other central landmarks.
- Noon mechanical clock: The church clock known as the Männleinlaufen performs a mechanical procession at noon every day and is best viewed from the Hauptmarkt in front of the church.
- Christmas market location: The square in front of the church hosts Nuremberg's main Christmas market, making December a peak time to visit for atmosphere and stalls.
