The Frasassi Caves are a large karst cave system near Genga in the Marche region of central Italy. The complex includes extensive speleothems and major caverns developed in limestone.
Visitors follow a developed show-cave route to view large chambers, impressive stalactites and stalagmites and other karst formations. The caves are equipped with paths and lighting and are a major destination for speleology tourism and school groups from the region.
Modern exploration and mapping of the Frasassi system was carried out by Italian speleologists in the 20th century, opening sections of the caves to public visitation and scientific study. The system continues to be the focus of geological and hydrological research.
The cave complex lies in the Apennine foothills near the town of Genga in the province of Ancona, Marche, inland from Italy’s Adriatic coast.

- Pre-book a timed guided visit at the Frasassi Visitor Centre in Genga on busy weekends or holidays - tours run on a schedule and early slots (first tours of the day) are noticeably less crowded.
- Arrive via the main Genga/Frasassi entrance and, if you have time after the cave tour, walk the above‑ground trails and viewpoints in the Gola della Rossa e Frasassi park - many visitors miss the dramatic canyon views above the caves.
- If you want better photos of the formations, join an earlier or later guided tour when the groups are smaller and staff lighting is less interrupted by large crowds.
