Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro

The Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Quere9taro are a serial UNESCO World Heritage property comprising five mission complexes established in the 18th century. They were founded by Franciscan missionaries to evangelise and administer the remote Sierra Gorda region.

Each complex includes a church with richly decorated facades and interiors, cloisters and ancillary buildings, displaying a distinctive regional baroque that blends European and indigenous decorative motifs. The missions are noted for painted ornamentation, polychrome stonework and integrated community spaces.

The missions were constructed and decorated during the mid-18th century as part of an organised missionary programme; they played roles in religious, social and economic reorganisation of local indigenous populations. Their artistic and architectural ensembles reflect both missionary objectives and local craft traditions.

All five missions are located within the Sierra Gorda mountain region of Quere9taro state in central Mexico, set among rugged valleys and forested slopes that were historically remote from colonial urban centres.
