Paris & Northern France (Île‑de‑France, Normandy)
April brings longer days and often some of the nicest weather of the year: Parisian terraces fill up and the Normandy orchards begin to show blossom. Occasional frontal systems still bring sharp showers, but it’s a prime month for visiting Monet’s garden at Giverny or the Mont Saint‑Michel approaches before the summer crush. A light waterproof and layers will keep you comfortable between sudden sunny patches and cool evenings.
Brittany & the Atlantic Coast (Bretagne, Saint‑Malo, Brest, La Rochelle)
April brings longer, milder days and clear spells that make lighthouse walks and harbour cafés enjoyable; tidal islands like Monts‑D’Arrée feel dramatic after storms. Occasional heavy showers still occur, but the Atlantic is kinder and local vegetable markets begin filling out. This is an excellent month for cycling and sampling early-season seafood without crowds.
Loire Valley & Western Interior (Tours, Amboise, Saumur, Angers)
April sees gardens in bloom and riverbanks lively with walkers-this is a classic month to see the Loire châteaux with fewer crowds than summer. Temperatures are generally mild but showers are frequent, so plan flexible outdoor time and book château tours in advance when weather is good. A waterproof jacket and comfortable daypack make château-hopping easier.
Bordeaux, Dordogne & Southwest (Bordeaux, Biarritz, Dordogne, Arcachon)
April produces longer, milder days where riverside villages look revived; Arcachon Bay begins to bustle and the dune at Pilat is pleasant for climbs. Occasional heavy showers can still occur, but it’s a fine month for castle visits and wine tastings before the summer crowds. Light waterproofs and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
French Alps (Chamonix, Grenoble, Annecy, Val d’Isère)
April ushers in spring conditions: higher resorts still ski well, while valleys thaw and reveal hiking routes and alpine meadows. Crevasse and avalanche hazard remains a concern at higher elevations; guided outings are recommended for off-piste plans. Shoulder‑season prices drop for many accommodations, but bring both warm and light layers for dramatic daily temperature swings.
Provence & the Côte d’Azur (Marseille, Avignon, Aix‑en‑Provence, Nice, Cannes)
April brings warmer days and noticeably lengthening light-ideal for exploring Roman ruins around Orange or coastal walks in the Calanques. Rain showers are typically short-lived and the countryside is very green. Accommodation is less expensive than summer and cafés open terraces; bring a light jacket for cool coastal evenings and potential gusts.
