Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle is a 12th-century fortified manor in Suffolk, England, notable for its well-preserved curtain wall and towers rather than a central stone keep. It is one of the better-preserved examples of a castle defined by a stone curtain with projecting towers.

The castle’s outer wall encloses an inner bailey and offers a complete circuit that visitors can walk, providing expansive views across the Suffolk landscape. It is well interpreted for visitors and is used for educational events and public access.

Built in the medieval period by the powerful local nobility, the castle passed through several hands, played roles in regional and national politics, and was used as a refuge and stronghold across the Middle Ages. It later ceased to be a primary residence and became a historic monument.
