Fox Islands (Alaska)
Islands Remote Aleutian islands with significant seabird populations
The Fox Islands in the Aleutians, including Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, combine commercial fishing ports, seabird colonies and WWII sites; anglers, historians and wildlife guides use the islands as bases for rugged Alaskan sea trips.
The Fox Islands are the eastern island group of the Aleutian archipelago in southwestern Alaska, forming a chain of volcanic, rocky islands between the Alaska Peninsula and the central Aleutians. They are characterized by rugged terrain, active volcanism, and important commercial fishing ports.
Seabird colonies, large populations of marine mammals, and productive fishing grounds are the principal natural attractions; wildlife viewing and commercial fishing are major local activities. The port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska is one of the region’s primary hubs for maritime traffic and seafood processing.
The islands are the traditional lands of the Unangax̂ (Aleut) people and were visited and settled by Russians during the fur trade era. They became part of the United States after the Alaska Purchase in 1867 and played a strategic role in World War II, with the Dutch Harbor area attacked in June 1942.
Geographically the Fox Islands form the eastern section of the Aleutians, extending west from the eastern passes off the Alaska Peninsula; the group includes larger islands such as Unimak and Unalaska and lies roughly 800-1,000 kilometers southwest of mainland Alaska’s major urban centers.
- Access point: Maritime and aviation services are concentrated at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska, which is the typical entry point for visitors and freight.
- Weather and logistics: The islands are volcanic, remote, and weather can change rapidly; transport and visitor plans should allow extra time for delays.
What to See #
- Unalaska / Dutch Harbor: Largest settlements in the group include Unalaska and Akutan, with Unalaska hosting the port of Dutch Harbor, a major commercial fishing base.
- Unimak Island: Unimak is the easternmost of the group and contains active volcanoes and sparsely populated terrain used for subsistence and seasonal activities.
