Foulness Island
Island Tidal island in Essex, largely military firing range
Off Essex, Foulness Island presents broad saltmarshes, remote beaches and birdwatching; public access is restricted in places, so visits are often limited or scheduled.
Foulness Island is a low-lying island off the coast of Essex in eastern England, within the Thames estuary and administratively part of the county of Essex. It comprises farmland, salt marsh and scattered settlements and has long been used for military testing and training, which limits public access in parts.
The island’s landscape is characterised by reclaimed agricultural land behind sea walls and extensive tidal flats and marshes that attract coastal birds and provide pastoral scenery. Public roads and causeways connect parts of the island to the mainland, but access is controlled in areas used by the Ministry of Defence.
Historically the island has been inhabited and farmed for centuries and has also been used for defence purposes, including weapons testing and ranges. These military uses expanded in the 20th century and continue to shape land ownership and access.
Foulness lies off the Essex coast in the Thames estuary to the east of the mainland, within Rochford district and south of the estuary approaches to the River Thames and the port areas downstream of London.
- Access restrictions: Much of the island is owned or used by the Ministry of Defence, and public access can be restricted; check local access arrangements before planning a visit.
