Forum of Arcadius
Plaza Late Roman forum site with monumental column in Istanbul
In Istanbul’s historic peninsula, the Forum of Arcadius survives in fragments-notably the Column of Arcadius-attracting visitors interested in Late Roman urban layout and Byzantine archaeology.
The Forum of Arcadius was a late Roman imperial forum erected in Constantinople during the reign of Emperor Arcadius in the early 5th century AD. The complex was associated with imperial ceremonial functions and included a monumental column dedicated to the emperor.
The best-known surviving element linked to the site is the remains of the Column of Arcadius, which stood as a commemorative monument within the forum. Over the centuries the forum complex and its monuments fell into ruin and were reused as the city evolved.
Constructed during Arcadius’s reign, the forum and its column formed part of a sequence of monumental public spaces in Constantinople designed to express imperial authority and commemorate victories or emperors. The remains visible today reflect the later collapse and fragmentary survival of Constantinople’s late Roman monuments.
The forum was located on the historic peninsula of Constantinople, in what is now central Istanbul, within the dense urban core of the city where later Byzantine and Ottoman construction overlaid earlier Roman structures.
