The Fortress of Izborsk is a medieval fortification in Pskov Oblast in northwestern Russia, set above the village of Izborsk. It is one of the region’s oldest fortified sites with origins in the medieval period and a visible ensemble of walls and towers.
The visible remains include fortified walls and towers sited on a rocky hilltop, and the complex presents archaeological and architectural layers from different periods of construction and repair. The site is interpreted as an important defensive point in the borderlands of medieval Rus.
Built and modified intermittently across the medieval and early modern eras, the fortress played a defensive role in regional conflicts and border defence. Portions of the structure were reinforced in later centuries to respond to evolving military technology.
The fortress stands above the village of Izborsk in Pskov Oblast, in a rural, undulating landscape near the western Russian border.
