Fort Point National Historic Site
Park Civil War-era fort beneath Golden Gate Bridge
Beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point is a 19th-century masonry fort with cannon emplacements and interpretive exhibits; visitors study Civil War-era history and photograph bay views.
Fort Point National Historic Site is a mid-19th-century masonry seacoast fort located at the southern side of the Golden Gate in San Francisco. The fort preserves a large brick fortification built to defend the entrance to San Francisco Bay.
The site features the original brick casemates, gunrooms and parade areas, with interpretive exhibits about coastal defense and Civil War-era construction. Its position directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge provides unique perspectives of the bridge and the bay.
Construction began in the 1850s and the fort was largely completed by the early 1860s as part of coastal defenses for the rapidly growing port of San Francisco. Although it never saw combat, the fort remained an active military post into the late 19th century and was later preserved for its historic and architectural value.
Located at the southern entrance to the Golden Gate, the fort sits at the foot of the Presidio and directly under the Golden Gate Bridge, adjacent to the San Francisco waterfront.
- Best viewpoints: The fort sits directly beneath the southern anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge and offers a close-up view of the bridge structure as well as protected vantage points for photographing the structure and the bay.
How to Get to Fort Point National Historic Site #
Fort Point National Historic Site sits directly beneath the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge in the Presidio of San Francisco. From downtown San Francisco it’s a short drive (about 3-4 miles, commonly 10-20 minutes depending on traffic) heading north via Van Ness/US‑101 toward the bridge; follow signs for the Presidio/Golden Gate Bridge and park in designated Presidio or Fort Point parking areas (parking can be limited).
Public transit: San Francisco Muni buses and Presidio shuttles serve the Presidio and Crissy Field area; expect a 10-20 minute walk from nearby bus stops (Crissy Field/Marina area) down to Fort Point. Fort Point is very walkable from the Crissy Field and Marina Green visitor areas.
Tips for Visiting Fort Point National Historic Site #
- Approach on foot from Crissy Field or the Presidio trails rather than trying to park under the bridge - the paths deliver you to the fort with sweeping waterfront views and avoid limited on‑site parking.
- Allow time to explore the casemates and the fort's roof - visitors who only photograph the Golden Gate from the bridge miss dramatic, up‑close perspectives of the bridge and the bay from the fort itself.
- Visit mid‑week or early morning to avoid weekend crowds and the fog that often rolls in during late afternoon; ranger‑led tours are offered periodically, so check the National Park Service schedule if you want a deeper look.
