Fort Negley is a Civil War-era fortification on a hill just south of downtown Nashville, Tennessee, built by Union forces after the city’s capture in 1862. It functioned as a defensive strongpoint and now survives as an interpreted park and historic site.
The site features exposed earthworks and stonework, walking trails and interpretive signage describing construction, military use and later preservation efforts. The hilltop location offers clear views over central Nashville.
Union troops and formerly enslaved labourers constructed the fortifications during 1862 and 1863 to defend Union-held Nashville and its strategic rail and river connections. The fort fell into disrepair in the postwar years and has since been the subject of archaeological work and park restoration.
Fort Negley sits on a ridge south of downtown Nashville within Fort Negley Park, accessible from city roads and parking near the site.
