Fort Lennox

Fort Lennox is a 19th century British-built stone fortification located on an island in the Richelieu River in Quebec. It was constructed after the War of 1812 and is preserved as a National Historic Site of Canada.

The site presents a compact bastioned fort with stone ramparts, restored barracks and service buildings, and visible defensive outworks including a surrounding ditch. Interpretation focuses on the fort’s 19th century military architecture and the lives of the garrison.

Construction took place in the early 19th century as part of British efforts to secure the Richelieu River route following the War of 1812. The fort served as a garrison and defensive position but did not engage in significant combat; it was later preserved for its historical and architectural value.

The fort occupies Île aux Noix in the Richelieu River, in southern Quebec, and is reached from the mainland by short ferry or seasonal access arrangements; it sits within a river corridor that links toward the St. Lawrence.
