Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves a mid-19th-century U.S. Army frontier post on the Santa Fe Trail in central Kansas. The post was established in 1859 and served as a military supply and protection point during westward migration and Indian Wars.

The site features restored and reconstructed adobe and wood buildings arranged around a central parade ground along with museum exhibits that interpret army garrison life, trade on the Santa Fe Trail, and relations with Plains tribes. Visitors often explore the fort’s barracks, officer quarters and hospital areas and see museum displays about military and civilian activity on the trail.

Fort Larned was founded as a military post in 1859 and remained active through the 1870s as traffic along the Santa Fe Trail and conflicts in the region continued. After military use ended, the fort fell into ruin before later preservation and restoration as a historic site.

The historic site sits near the town of Larned in central Kansas, along the historic route of the Santa Fe Trail. The surrounding landscape is prairie and agricultural land typical of central Kansas.

  • Visitor center: On-site visitor center provides orientation, exhibits and ranger information about the Santa Fe Trail and frontier Army life.
  • Living history programs: Outdoor tours and seasonal living-history events illustrate soldier life in the 1860s and 1870s.
