Fort King George is a colonial-era historic site near Darien in McIntosh County, Georgia. The original outpost was established in 1721 as a British frontier fort on the Georgia coast.
The site contains a reconstructed wooden blockhouse, period-style structures, interpretive panels and a small museum that explain early 18th-century frontier life and military engineering. Grounds are compact and primarily outdoors, with walking paths around the reconstructed works.
The original Fort King George was built by the British in 1721 to assert control on the southern frontier of the colony of Georgia and to deter Spanish and French influence. The site changed hands and fell out of military use later in the 18th century; the present blockhouse is a modern reconstruction used for interpretation.
