Fort George
Museum 18th-century coastal fortress near Inverness
Guarding the Moray Firth approach, Fort George outside Inverness is an 18th-century fortress popular with visitors for military history exhibits, drill demonstrations and coastal views.
Fort George is a large 18th-century artillery fortress on the Moray Firth coast in northeast Scotland, near Ardersier. It was constructed after the 1745 Jacobite rising and is noted for its scale and state of preservation.
Visitors encounter broad stone ramparts, bastions and a spacious parade ground, along with interpretive displays in a site museum. The fort’s design is a textbook example of post-1745 British fortification, with angled bastions and heavy stonework intended to control coastal approaches.
Built between 1748 and 1769, the fort was constructed to secure government control over the Highlands after the Jacobite rebellions and to prevent further Jacobite uprisings. Over time it has remained in military use and has been maintained as both a living barracks and a heritage site.
Fort George lies on a promontory on the southern shore of the Moray Firth, approximately 12 km northeast of Inverness by road; it commands views across the firth toward Chanonry Point and the Cromarty Firth area.
- Construction dates: Construction ran from 1748 to 1769, making it one of the largest 18th-century artillery forts in Europe and one of the best-preserved examples of that period.
- Location and access: Located about 12 km northeast of Inverness, the fort offers wide views over the Moray Firth and is accessible by road for visitors; it remains an active military installation in parts, so some areas are off-limits.
What to See #
- Ramparts and bastions: The outer stone ramparts and bastions that surround the fort, providing broad fields of fire and the principal visitor walking routes. These ramparts remain largely intact and give expansive views across the Moray Firth.
- Parade ground and museum: The internal parade ground, barrack blocks and the visitor museum that interpret the fort's history and daily life from the 18th century to present; parts of the site are still used by the British Army.
