Fort Garry, Winnipeg

Fort Garry is a district in southern Winnipeg named for the historic Hudson’s Bay Company trading post Fort Garry. It functions as a mixed residential, institutional and commercial area within the city.

The area contains the University of Manitoba main campus, neighbourhood residential streets, and commercial corridors serving local residents and students. Riverfront green spaces and parks lie along parts of the Red River within or adjacent to the district.

The district takes its name from the original Fort Garry trading post established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in the early 19th century; the name persisted as settlement expanded and Winnipeg grew southward. Over time the area transitioned from fur-trade outpost to suburban district and then into an integral part of the modern city.

Fort Garry sits in the southern part of Winnipeg along the Red River, directly south of the city’s downtown core and encompassing the University of Manitoba campus and surrounding neighbourhoods.
