Fort Frederica National Monument

Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island, Georgia, preserves the remains of an 18th-century British fort and town established to protect the southern boundary of the Province of Georgia. The site includes archaeological remains of the original fortifications and the town laid out in the 1730s.

Interpretive trails and displays lead visitors through the fort’s earthworks, bastions and the grid of the colonial town where house foundations and street lines are visible. Museum exhibits and on-site signage explain the site’s military role, settlement patterns and the 18th-century colonial context.

Fort Frederica was founded by General James Oglethorpe in the 1730s as part of British colonial defence and settlement efforts; it saw action in regional conflicts during that decade and was later abandoned, leaving archaeological remains. Preservation and archaeological work in the 20th century established the site’s significance and interpretation as a national monument.

The monument is located on St. Simons Island on the Georgia coast, near the island’s small towns and beach communities and within driving distance of the port city of Brunswick and the larger city of Savannah.
