Fort Davis National Historic Site is a preserved 19th-century U.S. Army fort in west Texas, originally established to protect travelers and shipments across the frontier. It preserves many original adobe and stone buildings and interprets Army life on the southwestern frontier.
Interpretive exhibits and restored structures show military, medical and domestic functions typical of a frontier garrison. Visitors can walk the parade ground, inspect officers’ quarters and see original defensive works and magazines.
The post was established in the mid-19th century and was occupied during the Indian Wars and western expansion; its buildings reflect construction and use across the latter half of that century. Over time the fort was abandoned for active military use and later preserved as a historic site.
