Fort Coenraadsburg is a 17th-century fortification near Elmina on Ghana’s central coast, positioned on a hill above the harbor and close to Elmina Castle. The fort was constructed by European colonial powers in the period following the Dutch capture of Elmina and was used to control access to the harbor.
Its hilltop location makes it readily visible from the town and the sea and it forms part of the historic coastal fort landscape in the Central Region. The fort has been altered over time and sits in close proximity to the larger Elmina Castle complex.
The site is located immediately inland from Elmina’s shoreline, overlooking the fishing harbor and the larger castle complex on the water’s edge.
