Monument Site of 16th-century French colonial fort and park
Fort Caroline near Jacksonville marks a 16th-century French colonial settlement; visitors encounter interpretive displays about early European contact and the St. Johns River setting.
Fort Caroline is the site of a 16th-century French Huguenot settlement in what is now northeastern Florida, commemorated today as a historic memorial and interpretive site near the St. Johns River.
The memorial features a reconstructed fort outline and interpretive exhibits that explain the short-lived French presence in the area, colonial encounters and the 1565 Spanish assault that ended the settlement. Trails and riverside viewpoints link the fort area with surrounding natural habitats that were part of the original coastal landscape.
Founded by French colonists in 1564, the settlement was attacked and captured by Spanish forces under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, after which Spanish control was established in the region. The site’s modern interpretation focuses on the colonial contest for Florida and the interactions among Europeans and indigenous peoples.
