Fort Bourtange Fort

Fort Bourtange is a 16th-century star fort near the village of Bourtange in Groningen province, Netherlands, originally constructed during the Dutch Revolt. Its five-pointed bastioned layout is the defining characteristic of the site.

The central fortification and surrounding earthworks are the main attractions, with a clearly legible star-shaped plan of ramparts and moats roughly matching the original defensive geometry. The interior hosts a small reconstructed village and museum displays that illustrate military and civilian life within the fort.

The fort was built in 1593 under the command of William Louis of Nassau to control the road between Germany and the city of Groningen; it remained militarily relevant through the early modern period and later fell into disuse. A comprehensive restoration campaign in the 20th century rebuilt the fort and village for heritage and tourism purposes.

The site sits at the village of Bourtange in the far northeast of the Netherlands, in a flat agricultural landscape near the German border and accessible by road from larger towns in Groningen province.

The fort sits in the far northeast of the Netherlands near the village of Bourtange. From Groningen city, take bus 44 (Qbuzz) toward Stadskanaal and alight at Bourtange; total journey about 1 hour 15 minutes. By car, follow the N366/E233 and then provincial roads N391/N967 - parking is available near the main gate. From the nearby German town of Emmen it’s roughly a 30-40 minute drive.

• Enter the village from the north gate: it keeps the best view of the star-shaped moat and avoids the thin tourist path that squashes the main square.
• Time the visit for a living-history program (check local listings) - the costumed workshops and cannon demonstrations make the geometry of the place click.
• Circumnavigate on foot rather than taking the short shuttle; the battered, low stone kerbs and wear marks on the wooden drawbridge tell more stories than the museum plaques.
