Fort Ancient (Lebanon, Ohio)

Fort Ancient is a prehistoric hilltop enclosure and mound complex near Lebanon, Ohio, that preserves large earthen walls and burial mounds built by pre-Columbian Native American peoples. The site is a major archaeological feature in southwestern Ohio and is interpreted and managed as a preserved historic area.

Visitors can walk trails that follow the contours of the earthworks and view the burial mounds and terraces from designated paths; a small museum and interpretive displays explain the site’s cultural context. The visible banks and mounds form the primary attractions for most visitors.

The earthworks were constructed by indigenous peoples prior to European contact and have long been recognised for their archaeological and cultural significance. Over time the site has been investigated by archaeologists and preserved for public interpretation and research.
