Forggensee is an artificial reservoir in Bavaria on the Lech River near the town of Füssen in southern Germany. It was created for hydroelectric power generation and flood control and functions today as a recreational lake in summer months.

The lake’s shoreline and surrounding foothills make it a scenic setting for boating, cycling and lakeside walks, with views across to the nearby Alps and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in the surrounding region. Seasonal water-level management affects boating and shoreline exposure.

The reservoir was formed by damming the Lech and is operated as part of regional hydroelectric and water-management infrastructure. Its status as a managed reservoir means levels are regularly adjusted for maintenance and energy production.

Forggensee lies near Füssen in the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria, close to the Austrian border and at the northern edge of the Alps; it is a short drive from the towns that serve visitors to the nearby castles and alpine attractions.

Forggensee is the reservoir near Füssen and Schwangau in Bavaria. From the town of Füssen or Schwangau drive a few kilometres on local roads to the lakeshore and designated viewing/parking areas; many visitors combine it with Neuschwanstein (Schwangau). From Munich, drive south on the A96 (then regional roads/B17 toward Füssen) - the trip is roughly 120-130 km and typically takes about 1.5-2 hours. Regional trains run from Munich to Füssen; from Füssen station the lake and shoreline viewpoints are a short taxi or RVO bus ride (or a 10-20 minute local drive).

• Visit in summer mornings when the lake is full and calm-Forggensee is drained in late autumn/winter for flood control, so timing determines whether you'll see a wide water surface or exposed shoreline.
• Use the smaller shore access points outside the main tourist towns (for example near Füssen/Schwangau) to find quieter viewpoints and better reflections of the Bavarian Alps rather than crowding the main promenades.
• If you want a waterborne view, plan for the operating season of the local passenger boat cruises (summer months); check schedules in advance since services are seasonal.
