Forest of Dean
Area Historic English forest with ancient woodlands and industry
An ancient woodland in western England between the Rivers Wye and Severn; people visit for walking and cycling trails, canoeing, wildlife spotting and industrial archaeology linked to historic ironworking.
The Forest of Dean is a historic and largely wooded region in western Gloucestershire, England, known as one of England’s surviving ancient forest landscapes. It has a long history of woodland management and extractive industry.
A varied network of walking and cycling routes, riverside viewpoints and heritage attractions draws people for outdoor recreation and local history. Key sites include ancient woodland gullies, a permanent outdoor sculpture trail, visitor centres and show caves, plus riverside cliffs used for canoeing and birdwatching.
The area was managed as a royal forest in medieval times and later supported ironworking, coal and stone extraction; remnants of that industrial history remain in heritage museums and disused workings. Local customary practices such as the historical right of “free miners” developed around the mining economy.
Geographically it sits between the River Wye and the River Severn in western Gloucestershire, near the towns of Coleford, Lydney and Cinderford and adjacent to the border with Wales. The landscape is a mix of mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland, limestone ridges and river valley.
- Access: Marked network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes crosses extensive woodland and limestone ridges; many routes meet local villages such as Coleford, Lydney and Cinderford.
- Best time to visit: Autumn and spring are prime times for leaf colour and wildflower displays; designated trails and waymarked routes make navigation straightforward for day visits.
