How to Get to Fonyód
Fonyód on the south shore of Lake Balaton is reached most easily via Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) or seasonally via Hévíz-Balaton (Sármellék, SOB). The town has a MÁV railway station (Fonyód vasútállomás) with regular regional and InterCity services along the Budapest-Nagykanizsa line.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD): The main international gateway for Fonyód. From the airport you can take a taxi or car hire (roughly 1.5-2 hours / ~140-160 km by road) or use public transport into Budapest and then an IC or regional MÁV train to Fonyód. Typical one-way train travel time from Budapest to Fonyód is about 2-2.5 hours; regional fares are commonly in the low thousands of forints (approx. 2,500-4,500 HUF) depending on train type.
Hévíz-Balaton / Sármellék (SOB): A small regional airport on the western end of Lake Balaton with seasonal flights. From Sármellék a taxi or transfer to Fonyód takes about 30-45 minutes by road; expect taxi/shuttle prices roughly €30-€50 depending on season and operator.
Train: Fonyód has its own station (Fonyód vasútállomás) on the Budapest-Nagykanizsa line served by MÁV regional and InterCity trains. Trains from Budapest (often departing from Déli or Kelenföld) take about 2-2.5 hours; regional fares typically start around a few thousand forints (approx. 2,500-4,500 HUF) depending on train type and discounts.
Bus: Regional buses (Volánbusz and local operators) link Fonyód with Siófok, Kaposvár and other Balaton towns; short intercity journeys around the lake are often 500-1,500 HUF and take 15-60 minutes depending on route.
How to Get Around Fonyód #
Fonyód is fairly compact and walkable, especially along the lakeside promenade and town centre. Regional trains and buses link the town with other Balaton resorts; in summer there are also bike rentals and frequent boat/ferry services on Lake Balaton. Taxis and local buses cover short hops - expect short rides to cost a few euros, and bring a card or some Hungarian forints for smaller operators.
