Fondaco dei Tedeschi

The Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a historic palazzo on the north bank of the Grand Canal immediately adjacent to the Rialto Bridge in Venice. Originally it served as the depot and headquarters for German merchants in the medieval and Renaissance periods.

The current Renaissance-era building dates from the early 16th century and retains a large facade and courtyard typical of trading fondachi. In recent years it has been adapted for commercial use while preserving key historic features and now includes a public rooftop terrace with views over the Rialto area.

Visitors come to see the building’s facade, the internal spaces that recall its mercantile past, and the rooftop panorama over the Grand Canal and surrounding landmarks. The palazzo remains tightly integrated into the Rialto commerce and pedestrian routes.

The Fondaco sits in the San Polo district on the Grand Canal, directly at the Rialto crossing, and is one of the most accessible historic mercantile buildings in Venice.
