Folkestone Castle
Historical Site Medieval castle ruins overlooking Folkestone harbour
Norman‑era castle ruin above Folkestone’s seafront in Kent; visitors combine a coastal stroll with ruins and views toward the English Channel.
Folkestone Castle is the ruined remains of a medieval castle located in the town of Folkestone, Kent, England. Its origins date to the Norman period in the 11th to 12th centuries and the site is a recognized historic ruin within the town.
The site consists of exposed earthworks and fragments of stone masonry on a seafront promontory overlooking the English Channel. The location provides short walks from the town centre and panoramic coastal views rather than an intact keep or large interior spaces.
The castle was established in the Norman period and served as a local strongpoint and manorial centre in the medieval era. Over subsequent centuries the structure fell into ruin and today survives mainly as archaeological remains and visible defensive earthworks.
The ruins sit within Folkestone town, on a promontory above the seafront and close to the town centre and promenade. The site is accessible on foot from central Folkestone and lies directly above the English Channel.
How to Get to Folkestone Castle #
From Folkestone Central railway station: approximately a 20-25 minute walk west along the seafront and up The Leas to Castle Hill. By car: follow signs for The Leas/Folkestone Seafront; limited roadside parking along the seafront and in nearby town car parks.
Tips for Visiting Folkestone Castle #
- Walk up from The Leas - the grassy promenade gives the most cinematic view of the castle ruins and the English Channel.
- Visit at low tide if you plan to stroll the shoreline below; some of the old flint-work and sea-worn masonry are best seen from the beach.
- Bring a local guidebook or check the Folkestone Museum for a short leaflet; the castle itself is a ruin with no facilities.
Best Time to Visit Folkestone Castle #
Any time the cliffs are accessible - summer brings numbers, shoulder seasons bring atmosphere.
