Foguang Temple

Foguang Temple (Foguangsi) is a Buddhist temple complex on Mount Wutai in Shanxi province, China. The site contains an 9th-century timber hall that is one of the earliest large surviving wooden buildings in China.

The main draw is the temple’s Tang-dynasty East Hall, dated to 857 AD, which is studied for its timber construction, dougong bracket work and extant Buddhist statuary. Visitors also see the surrounding temple courtyards and later-period halls and cloisters that form the monastic complex.

A temple complex has stood at the site since the Tang dynasty; the extant East Hall dates specifically to 857 AD and represents a rare surviving example of pre-Song monumental timber architecture. The temple complex was maintained and altered in subsequent dynasties and has been the subject of conservation and architectural study in modern times.

Foguang Temple is located on Mount Wutai (Wutaishan) in Shanxi province, within the mountain range that is one of China’s principal Buddhist pilgrimage areas.
