The memorial complex includes a long commemorative wall inscribed with the names of the 40 victims, a contemplative Memorial Plaza and a separate vertical memorial known as the Tower of Voices containing wind chimes for each person. The on-site visitor center provides exhibits and interpretation about the flight and events of that day.
The design intentionally separates the commemorative elements from the crash site, providing pathways and viewpoints that allow reflection while preserving the landscape where the airplane came down.
On 11 September 2001 Flight 93 crashed after passengers and crew attempted to retake control of the aircraft from hijackers. Federal and local authorities later designated the site for a national memorial; the National Park Service manages the site and its interpretive programs.
