The Flemish Be9guinages are a serial UNESCO World Heritage property inscribed in 1998 that comprises a number of well-preserved enclosed complexes in Flanders. They were built to house lay religious women known as béguines and date mainly from the medieval and early modern periods.
Examples include compact courtyards of housing, small churches and related civic buildings that retain their original street patterns and enclosures. The complexes are notable for their combination of domestic architecture and communal religious life, and several remain in residential use.
These béguinages were created and developed across towns in the historic region of Flanders. They are distributed among several cities and towns in the Flemish Region, often located within or adjacent to medieval urban cores.

How to Get to Flemish Béguinages #
Most Flemish béguinages are in city centers. The Bruges Large Beguinage (Begijnhof) is a 10-15 minute walk from Bruges train station; Leuven’s Groot Begijnhof is a 15-20 minute walk from Leuven station. Local buses and city-center walking routes connect others. Wear quiet shoes; many courtyards are residential and expect discretion.
