It is widely known as the lower terminus of the Flåm Railway, a major tourist attraction that connects sea-level Flåm with the mountain station at Myrdal.

The Flåm Railway covers 20.2 kilometres and climbs about 865 metres, offering steep gradients and dramatic scenery en route. The village also serves as a regular port for fjord cruises and excursion boats that operate on the Aurlandsfjord and Sognefjord.

Nearby visitor facilities include the harbour, local museums, and road viewpoints such as the Stegastein platform, which stands roughly 650 metres above the fjord and provides panoramic views. Outdoor activities include hiking, cycling, and boat trips.

Flåm lies at the inner end of Aurlandsfjord in western Norway, roughly 165-170 kilometres by road from the city of Bergen and within driving distance of other regional centres such as Sogndal and Voss.
