Fish River Canyon is a major erosional gorge in southern Namibia and is widely regarded as the largest canyon in Africa. It extends as a deep, meandering chasm carved by the Fish River across semi-arid terrain.

The canyon offers dramatic rim viewpoints along its length and a popular multi-day hiking route along the canyon floor that attracts experienced hikers. The landscape features steep cliffs, terraces and riverbed features that expose geological layering across long stretches.

The canyon was formed over millions of years by the Fish River and by tectonic and erosional processes, creating the deep gorge visible today. Human use has included seasonal travel routes and more recently managed recreation and conservation around the canyon rim.

Located in southern Namibia’s arid interior, the canyon lies within the ǁKharas Region and is approached from local settlements and a small resort near the canyon’s southern end.

  • Canyon hike: An 85-kilometre hiking route follows the canyon floor and is open seasonally with permits and strict safety requirements.
  • Scale and viewpoints: Viewing points along the canyon rim provide dramatic scale, with the gorge extending for about 160 kilometres and reaching depths around 550 metres in places.

How to Get to Fish River Canyon #

Fish River Canyon is reached by road from southern Namibia; the nearest service town is Keetmanshoop (about 130 km to the north‑east by road). From Keetmanshoop drive southwest on the national B1 then turn onto district/gravel roads toward Hobas and the Ai‑Ais reservoir-expect a mix of tar and long gravel stretches and allow 2-3 hours. A high‑clearance vehicle or 4x4 is recommended for the last sections; parking is usually a short walk (5-20 minutes) from the main viewpoints and trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Fish River Canyon #

  • Visit the main Hobas viewpoint at sunrise or sunset for the best light and far-reaching views - the canyon's walls show their textures most dramatically in low light and temperatures are cooler for lingering at viewpoints.
  • If you plan to hike the Fish River Canyon, book well in advance: the formal multi-day Fish River hike is a seasonal, permit-only route (typically run in the cooler months) with limited places and strict rules - check Namibia Parks/permit arrangements before you go.
  • Combine a viewpoint stop with a visit to the nearby Ai-Ais hot springs/resort if you want to relax after canyon viewing; Ai-Ais is the main service hub for the southern end of the canyon and saves a long drive back in one day.
