First Canadian Place
Building Toronto skyscraper and Canada's tallest office tower
On Toronto’s Bay Street, First Canadian Place is a major office tower in the financial district with a plaza and PATH connections; visitors pass through en route to trading floors, galleries and nearby landmarks.
First Canadian Place is a major skyscraper in Toronto’s Financial District and the tallest office building in Canada. Completed in the mid-1970s, it serves as a headquarters-grade office tower and anchors a block of financial institutions along Bay Street.
The tower is a vertical office complex with ground-floor retail and underground pedestrian connections to the city’s PATH network; most of the floors are occupied by financial and professional tenants. Its clean, rectilinear profile and height make it one of Toronto’s dominant downtown landmarks.
Constructed in the 1970s during a period of downtown office expansion, the building has undergone maintenance and refurbishments to its façades and mechanical systems since opening. The site sits within Toronto’s central business district close to other major office towers, transit and civic spaces.
Located at the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, the building stands near the intersection of Bay and King streets and is within short walking distance of Union Station and other major downtown destinations.
- Height: At about 298 metres tall with more than 70 floors, it is the tallest office building in Canada and a prominent feature of Toronto's Financial District skyline.
- Public access: Public interior access is generally limited to the ground-floor lobby and connected retail areas; viewing the skyline is best done from nearby public vantage points such as Nathan Phillips Square or adjacent towers with observation spaces.
What to See #
- Office tower and PATH connection: The tower contains primarily office floors and mechanical plant; public access is limited but the building connects into Toronto's underground PATH network for pedestrian access to transit and neighbouring towers.

King Street streetcars also run along King Street West near the tower; vehicle access is via Bay Street/King Street with limited downtown parking.
Tips for Visiting First Canadian Place #
- Access First Canadian Place through Toronto's PATH network from Union Station to avoid busy street-level traffic and construction; using the PATH is often the quickest, weather-proof route.
- If you want to see the building's interior architecture and the atrium, visit during weekday business hours but avoid peak lunch times when pedestrian traffic on surrounding sidewalks and PATH shops is highest.
- Many visitors miss the lower-level retail and PATH connections beneath the tower-allow a few minutes to explore the concourse if you need a quick bite or to transfer to nearby office towers.
Best Time to Visit First Canadian Place #
Visit outside weekday business hours if you want to avoid the lunchtime and commuter crowds in this downtown office tower complex.
