Fire Island is a narrow barrier island off the south shore of Long Island in New York State, known for its beaches, small seasonal communities and protected natural areas. The island stretches for several dozen miles and shelters bays and inlets on its north shore.

Small communities such as Ocean Beach, Cherry Grove and The Pines, the Fire Island Lighthouse, and large undeveloped sections managed as part of the Fire Island National Seashore. Recreation activities include swimming, birdwatching, hiking, and boating; many communities are primarily active during the summer season.

Historically the island has acted as a protective barrier for Long Island’s south shore and developed over the 19th and 20th centuries into a mix of resort communities and conserved natural areas. The National Seashore was established to protect the island’s habitats and public beach access.

Fire Island lies off the southern coast of Long Island, accessible by ferries from several Long Island mainland towns, and is approximately 30 miles from New York City by direct transport routes.

How to Get to Fire Island #

Fire Island is a barrier island off southern Long Island, New York. The usual way to reach the developed communities is by the ferries: Fire Island Ferries operate from Bay Shore to Ocean Beach and other communities, and ferries also run from Sayville to Cherry Grove and nearby points; schedules and departure points vary seasonally, so check the ferry operator for times. Alternatively you can drive from New York City (roughly 50-60 miles / 80-95 km depending on your start), take the Robert Moses Causeway to the Robert Moses State Park parking and walk onto the western end of the island, or drive to Bay Shore/Sayville and leave your car there before boarding the ferry.

Tips for Visiting Fire Island #

  • Choose your ferry terminal based on the Fire Island community you want to visit-Bay Shore and Sayville are the most common mainland departure points-check schedules and return times before you go.
  • Communities are largely car-free; plan to walk or bring/rent a bicycle and note that most supplies and overnight options are concentrated in Ocean Beach, Cherry Grove and a few smaller hamlets.
  • Visit the Sunken Forest early in the morning to avoid the mid-day crowds and see wildlife; if you want fewer people overall, choose smaller communities such as Fair Harbor or Saltaire instead of Ocean Beach.
