Finsevatnet
Lake High mountain lake near Finse on the railway
Finsevatnet sits beside Finse station on Norway’s Bergen Railway and serves as a base for hikers and ski-tourers; visitors use the lake area for glacier approaches and high-country walking.
Finsevatnet is a high-altitude lake in Vestland county, Norway, located beside the village of Finse on the Bergen Line. It lies at roughly 1,220 metres above sea level and is one of the highest settled spots on the railway between Oslo and Bergen.
The lake sits below the Hardangerjøkulen glacier and provides direct access to glacier routes, cross-country ski trails and mountain hiking. The flat landscape around the lake makes it a base for guided glacier trips and wild camping in summer and ski touring in winter.
The construction of the Bergen Line, opened in 1909, established Finse as a rail-accessible mountain hub; the railway station and maintenance works brought the area into regular use by travelers and researchers. Over the 20th century the site became known for alpine and polar research activity as well as tourism.
Finsevatnet lies on the high Hardangervidda plateau in central southern Norway, beside the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen. The lake and village are isolated from the road network and are reached mainly by train or by multi-day trails across the plateau.
- Access: Reached from the Bergen Line at Finse station; there is no public road access to the village of Finse.
- Outdoor activities: Sits adjacent to the Hardangerjøkulen glacier and is a common start point for glacier walks and high-mountain skiing.
