Finlaggan
Lake Medieval seat of the Lords of the Isles (Islay)
On Islay’s Loch Finlaggan, ruins and a small visitor centre mark the medieval seat of the Lords of the Isles. History-minded visitors come for archaeological remains, clan connections and coastal loch scenery.
Finlaggan is the archaeological and historical site on Loch Finlaggan on the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, known as the medieval seat of the Lords of the Isles.
The site comprises two main islands within the loch - Eilean Mòr and Eilean na Comhairle - with visible stone ruins including a chapel and the foundations of a large hall. A visitor centre on the shore provides displays of finds, interpretation and information for short walks around the loch.
Finlaggan was developed as the political and judicial centre of the Lordship of the Isles in the medieval period and was used by the MacDonald dynasty and their successors. Its role declined and the lordship was brought under crown authority in the late 15th century, after which its political importance diminished and the site gradually fell into ruin.
The site sits on Loch Finlaggan on Islay in Argyll and Bute, in the Inner Hebrides off Scotland’s west coast. The loch and islands are inland from Islay’s main coastal roads; the visitor centre is adjacent to the shore and boat transfers cross the short distance to the islands.
- Visitor centre: An on-site visitor centre presents archaeological finds, interpretive displays and easy walking routes around the loch shore.
- Access and best time to visit: Summer months offer the best conditions for visiting and for boat crossings to the islands; access to the islands is by short boat transfer from the loch shore rather than by road.
What to See #
- Eilean Mòr: The larger of the two main islands in Loch Finlaggan, containing the principal archaeological remains including a medieval chapel and the foundations of what is interpreted as the lords' stone hall and ancillary buildings.
- Eilean na Comhairle: A smaller island used historically as the council isle of the Lordship; archaeological traces show use for meetings and minor structures linked to the administration of the estate.
