The Fernsehturm Berlin is a television tower located at Alexanderplatz in central Berlin and is one of the city’s most prominent modern landmarks. It was completed and opened in 1969 and served both broadcasting and public viewing functions.
Visitors use the high-speed elevators to reach an observation deck and a rotating restaurant within the tower’s sphere at around 200-207 m above ground, offering panoramic views across Berlin. The tower’s total height is 368 m, making it the tallest structure in the city and visible from many central districts.
Built by the East German government during the 1960s, the tower combined communication infrastructure with a public viewing facility and has since become a common tourism destination. It sits adjacent to Alexanderplatz, a major transport and commercial hub in the Mitte district of Berlin.

How to Get to Fernsehturm Berlin #
The Fernsehturm (TV Tower) sits at Alexanderplatz in central Berlin. It is served directly by S-Bahn lines S5/S7/S75 and regional trains to Alexanderplatz station, and by U-Bahn lines U2, U5 and U8; several tram lines (for example M4/M5/M6) and many city buses also stop at Alexanderplatz. From Alexanderplatz station the tower entrance is a 2-5 minute walk.
By car the tower is in the Mitte district (city centre); from Berlin Hauptbahnhof it is one S-Bahn stop east (or about a 3-4 km drive depending on route).
Tips for Visiting Fernsehturm Berlin #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket online and aim for the first available slot after opening or a late-evening slot - the Fernsehturm sells out frequently and timed tickets are the most reliable way to avoid long queues.
- If you want the rotating-restaurant experience, reserve it separately from the observation-deck ticket; many visitors miss that the restaurant and observation platform have different booking systems.
- Arrive via Alexanderplatz public-transport stops (S‑/U‑Bahn/tram) to reach the tower entrance directly and avoid walking across the busiest pedestrian flows around the square.
Best Time to Visit Fernsehturm Berlin #
For the Fernsehturm, aim for weekday mornings or shoulder seasons to avoid the longest lines; weather is secondary because the attraction is primarily indoors.
