Fergana Valley
Valley Fertile intermontane valley shared by Central Asian states
A fertile valley shared by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the Fergana Valley attracts visitors to bazaars, silk workshops, orchards and historic towns with craft traditions.
The Fergana Valley is a large, fertile intermontane basin in Central Asia shared by eastern Uzbekistan, southern Kyrgyzstan and northern Tajikistan and long important for agriculture and settlement. It is one of the region’s main population and agricultural centres.
The valley’s rich soils and irrigation networks support intensive cultivation of cotton, fruits and cereals and a dense network of towns and markets. Key visitor interests include regional bazaars, historic urban centres and roadside markets rather than single monumental sites.
Historically the valley was an important segment of Silk Road communications and later the centre of the Kokand Khanate in the 18th and 19th centuries, which left a legacy of urban architecture and historical sites. Soviet-era irrigation and industrialisation reshaped land use and settlement patterns across the 20th century.
The Fergana Valley lies between the mountain ranges of the Tien Shan to the north and the Pamir-Alay to the south; the portion referenced here sits near Jalal-Abad Region in Kyrgyzstan but the valley as a whole crosses three national borders.
- Size: The valley is an elongated fertile basin roughly 300 kilometres long and about 70 kilometres across at its widest, forming one of Central Asia's most densely cultivated areas.
What to See #
- Major cities: The cities of Andijan, Namangan, Kokand and Fergana are the principal urban centres with industrial, cultural and market functions within the valley.
- Kokand historical sites: The historical seat of the Kokand Khanate in the 18th and 19th centuries, with surviving monuments such as the Khudayar Khan's Palace in Kokand.
