Fayaz Tepe

Fayaz Tepe is an archaeological Buddhist monastic complex in the Surxondaryo Region of southern Uzbekistan near the city of Termez. The site dates to the early centuries of the Common Era and produced important Central Asian Buddhist remains.

Visitors encounter the exposed foundations of monastic cells, stupas and chapels along with fragments of painted stucco and terracotta sculpture recovered from the site. The finds illustrate Buddhist devotional architecture and art associated with the region’s role as a crossroads of Gandharan and Kushan influences.

Constructed and used during the early centuries AD, Fayaz Tepe functioned as a monastery and pilgrimage complex in the wider context of Buddhist presence along the Oxus frontier. Soviet-era excavations in the mid-20th century documented the layout and removed many portable finds for study and conservation.

Located in southern Uzbekistan near Termez in the Surxondaryo Region, the site sits in the riverine plains close to the historic trade routes that connected Central Asia and South Asia.
