Fatehpur Sikri
Historical Site Abandoned Mughal city with red sandstone palaces
Akbar’s late-16th-century red-sandstone city, Fatehpur Sikri, preserves Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid and Panch Mahal; tourists visit for Mughal architecture, guided walks and short trips from Agra.
Fatehpur Sikri is a late 16th-century Mughal city complex in Uttar Pradesh founded and developed by Emperor Akbar around 1571 and later abandoned. It served as the Mughal capital for about 14 years and is now a well-preserved ensemble of palaces, mosques and administrative buildings.
Major features include the monumental Buland Darwaza gateway, the Jama Masjid, the Tomb of Salim Chishti, the Panch Mahal and the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas audience halls. The layout exhibits Akbar’s synthesis of Persian, Indian and regional architectural forms and extensive red sandstone detailing.
Akbar established the site as a new capital in the 1570s, investing in palaces and religious foundations; the city was largely vacated by the end of the 16th century, reportedly because of water supply problems and shifting political priorities. Its short-lived capital phase left a compact, intact complex.
The site lies about 35 kilometres west of Agra in the plains of central Uttar Pradesh and is routinely visited on day trips from Agra and surrounding towns.
- How much time to allow: Most major monuments sit close together on a compact site; a single walk of 1-2 hours covers the key structures but longer for detailed photography and interiors.
- Best season: The complex is at its most comfortable in the cooler months from October to March when temperatures are milder; summers can be very hot.
What to See #
- Buland Darwaza: A monumental gateway, built to celebrate Akbar's victory in Gujarat, that dominates the approach to the complex and faces toward the plains to the south.
- Audience halls and palaces: A palace and public buildings ensemble including the **Diwan-i-Am** (Hall of Public Audience) and **Diwan-i-Khas** (Hall of Private Audience) used for administration and court ceremonies under Emperor Akbar.
- Jama Masjid and Tomb of Salim Chishti: Religious and commemorative structures such as the Jama Masjid and the Tomb of Salim Chishti, the latter known for its white marble and associated with the Sufi saint Salim Chishti.
- Panch Mahal and residential buildings: The five-storey wooden Pavilion known as the Panch Mahal and other residential buildings demonstrating a mix of Mughal and earlier regional architectural features.
How to Get to Fatehpur Sikri #
Fatehpur Sikri is about 30-45 km west of Agra and is reached by road from Agra via the Agra-Fatehpur Sikri route. Regular state-run and private buses, as well as taxis from Agra, serve the site; the drive from Agra is typically around 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. There is also a small local station (Fatehpur Sikri) on the Agra-Jaipur line for some passenger trains.
Tips for Visiting Fatehpur Sikri #
- Arrive at opening time on a weekday to avoid the coach groups that descend from Agra later in the morning and to have quieter access to the Buland Darwaza and Jama Masjid.
- Enter and start your visit from the Buland Darwaza axis and work toward the Jama Masjid and palace complex to follow the site's original processional layout and avoid backtracking.
- Spend time in the royal enclosure and the Panch Mahal-these inner courtyards and pillared pavilions are often passed by visitors who focus only on the gateway.
