Fårö
Island Baltic island associated with Ingmar Bergman and rauks
Off Gotland’s northeast coast, Fårö draws film fans to Ingmar Bergman’s former haunts and the island’s rauks-towering limestone stacks-while cyclists and beachgoers explore sandy coves, wind-cut heath, and a few quietly eccentric local cafés.
Fårö is a small island off the north coast of Gotland in Sweden’s Gotland County, known for its wind-sculpted landscapes and coastal limestone formations. The island has a strong cultural association with filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, who lived and worked there for decades.
Visitors come for the distinctive rauks (limestone sea stacks) at Langhammars and Digerhuvud, long sandy bays such as Sudersand, quiet gravel roads for cycling and a sparse rural character that contrasts with busy Gotland. Film locations, guided walks and seasonal exhibitions linked to Bergman’s life draw cultural visitors as well as nature fans.
Historically part of Gotland’s maritime and agrarian economy, Fårö became internationally known in the 20th century through Bergman’s presence and films. Traditional fishing and farming shaped the island’s settlements while tourism grew from the mid-20th century onward.
The island sits immediately north of Gotland and is separated by the narrow sound at Fårösund; it is reached by a short ferry crossing from Gotland and lies within Gotland County, with Visby as the nearest major town across the water.
- Rauks: Distinct limestone sea stacks called rauks are concentrated at Langhammars and Digerhuvud and are best visited at low wind for photography.
- Bergman connection: The island has strong associations with filmmaker Ingmar Bergman; several sites and seasonal exhibitions interpret his life and work for visitors.
What to See #
- Langhammars Rauks: A coastal rauk field on the island's northwest coast with tall limestone sea stacks formed by erosion; one of the island's most photographed natural features.
- Sudersand Beach: Sandy bay with shallow waters and sand dunes on the island's east coast, popular in summer for swimming and beach walks.
- Bergman sites: Several locations associated with filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, who lived and worked on the island; pilgrimage sites for fans include filming locations and his former residence.
- Digerhuvud: An exposed headland with dramatic limestone outcrops and birdlife, offering short cliff walks and sea views.
How to Get to Fårö #
Fårö is an island off northern Gotland (Sweden) reached by a short car ferry from Fårösund on Gotland; the crossing is brief and runs frequently in summer. To reach the ferry you first get to Gotland (ferries from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn to Visby or flights to Visby Airport), then drive north from Visby to Fårösund (roughly a 70-90 km drive, about 1.5 hours by car) and take the Fårösund-Fårö ferry.
On Fårö a car, bike or local bus is the usual way to reach beaches and the island’s attractions; bring a vehicle or check seasonal bus schedules in advance.
Tips for Visiting Fårö #
- Take the short vehicle or ferry link from Fårösund on Gotland and plan morning visits to the rauk fields (Langhammars, Digerhuvud) when light is best and the sites are less busy than midday.
- Head to Langhammars first if you want dramatic seascapes and quieter trails; the main parking and path system there spreads visitors out so you can find gaps for photography away from the busiest viewpoints.
- Visit outside the peak July weekends or early/late in the day to avoid the short high‑season crowds; Fårö's attractions (coastal rauks and beaches) are most rewarding in soft light and with fewer people around.
Best Time to Visit Fårö #
Visit in summer (June-August) for the best weather and activities, or in shoulder months (May or September) for milder crowds and still-pleasant conditions.
