Fallingwater
Museum Iconic Wright-designed house cantilevered over a waterfall
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater sits over a woodland stream near Mill Run, Pennsylvania; architecture tours focus on cantilevered terraces, original interiors and the house’s integration with the waterfall and surrounding oak forest.
Fallingwater is a house in southwestern Pennsylvania designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmann family and built over a natural waterfall. It is widely cited as a key work of 20th-century American architecture.
The property’s primary attraction is the house itself, where bold horizontal terraces and cantilevered concrete elements project over the stream and rock outcrops. Interiors and site design integrate built elements with the surrounding forest and watercourse, and guided tours focus on architecture, construction and the relationship to the landscape.
The house’s setting includes woodland and walking trails that are part of the conserved tract surrounding the building, offering short nature walks in addition to the architectural tour.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Edgar J. Kaufmann, the house was completed in the mid-1930s and quickly became celebrated for its integration with the waterfall and landscape. Over subsequent decades it passed into conservation ownership and was restored and prepared for public visitation.
Fallingwater sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania near the community of Mill Run, in a forested valley of the Bear Run watershed; the site is accessed by road from nearby towns and regional highways.
- Tours and access: Public access is by timed guided tour only; reservations are recommended, especially in summer.
- Ownership and conservation: The house is owned and operated by a regional conservation organisation that also manages surrounding land to preserve the setting.
What to See #
- Main house: The main house is built directly over a natural stream and waterfall, with reinforced concrete terraces cantilevered over the rock.
- Visitor facilities: A small visitor centre and guided-tour operation manage public access; tours are timed and capacity-controlled to protect the site.
