Faisal Mosque
Mosque Pakistan's national mosque, modern triangular design
At Islamabad’s northern edge beneath the Margalla Hills, Faisal Mosque features a modernist design and large prayer hall; it functions as Pakistan’s national mosque and draws visitors for architecture and hilltop views.
Faisal Mosque is Pakistan’s national mosque located in Islamabad at the foot of the Margalla Hills. Its contemporary, tent‑inspired architectural form and four tall minarets make it a landmark of the capital.
The complex comprises a large main prayer hall and surrounding terraces and courtyards; the design rejects traditional domed forms in favor of a geometric, modernist composition. The mosque is an active religious site and a focal point for national and civic ceremonies.
The mosque was designed in the late 20th century by an international architect and constructed with funding from abroad; it opened to public use in the 1980s. Since completion it has served as both a place of worship and a national symbol.
It occupies a prominent site on the northern edge of Islamabad, facing the Margalla Hills and linked to the city by major avenues.
- Best time for photos: The mosque is often most photogenic at sunset when the Margalla Hills form a backdrop to the modern, angular silhouette.
What to See #
- Prayer hall: Main prayer hall with a folded, tent‑like roof form and a large interior used for daily and congregational prayers.
- Approaches and setting: The mosque complex includes landscaped approaches at the foothills of the Margalla range that frame views of the surrounding hills.
How to Get to Faisal Mosque #
Faisal Mosque sits at the foot of the Margalla Hills in Islamabad, at the end of Faisal Avenue. It is most easily reached by car or taxi from Islamabad city - take the main city roads toward the Margalla foothills (Faisal Avenue/nearby arterial roads from the Blue Area/Constitution Avenue). There is parking close to the mosque and a short walk from the parking area up to the mosque precincts; local buses and taxis also serve the area from central Islamabad.
Tips for Visiting Faisal Mosque #
- Visit at sunset for the best photographic light and clear views of the Margalla Hills framing the mosque - late afternoon visits also avoid the busiest prayer periods around Friday noon.
- Plan your visit outside Friday midday/Jummah prayers when the mosque is most crowded and parts of the complex may be closed to tourists.
- Respect visitor procedures at the entrance: modest dress and following the directions for accessing the non-prayer areas will make the short interior visit smoother, and exterior viewpoints on the surrounding avenues give excellent panorama shots if interior access is limited.
