Fair Head
Cape Northern Irish sea cliff popular for climbing and views
Cliffs at Fair Head rise above the North Channel; rock climbers, birdwatchers and coastal walkers come for long sea-cliff routes, views toward Rathlin Island and the basalt headland’s stark coastline.
Fair Head is a prominent coastal headland on the north coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland, noted for its steep rocky cliffs and exposed coastal scenery. The headland is a well known destination for rock climbing and sea-cliff walking.
The site features high coastal cliffs overlooking the North Channel and offers long-distance coastal views toward Rathlin Island and the Scottish coast on clear days. Climbers use established sea-cliff routes and walkers follow clifftop paths for viewpoints.
Fair Head is a natural headland formed of resistant rock that stands above the adjacent shoreline; it has been used for outdoor recreation rather than as a built landmark.
The headland lies on the Antrim coast near the village of Ballycastle and is accessed from local roads off the A2 coastal route.
- Activities and viewpoints: Clifftop viewpoints provide wide coastal panoramas and are a base for established rock-climbing routes on the sea cliffs. Birdwatching for seabirds is good from headland vantage points.
How to Get to Fair Head #
Fair Head lies about 6 km east of Ballycastle on the County Antrim coast. From Ballycastle take the A2 coastal road east, then Browns Bay Road to several small laybys and trailheads. The nearest large town with bus connections is Ballymoney; taxis run to Ballycastle. There is limited roadside parking; the best access points are the public car parks at the Torr and at Mullaghmore headlands.
Tips for Visiting Fair Head #
- Park near Ballycastle and walk the coastal trail east to reach the headland - parking at the smaller laybys is easiest.
- Bring windproof clothing; the summit is exposed and gusts can be severe even on calm days.
- Climbers' routes on the basalt columns are graded and popular; contact local climbing clubs in Ballycastle for current access info.
- On cliff-top paths watch for nesting seabirds in spring (April-July) and keep dogs on a lead.
