Faial Island
Island Azorean island famous for Capelinhos volcanic landscape
In the central Azores, Faial’s Horta marina serves transatlantic yachts, with a volcanic landscape shaped by the 1957 Capelinhos eruption, whale-watching trips and hydrangea-lined coastal roads.
Faial Island is part of the Central Group of the Azores archipelago and is notable for its volcanic landscapes and Atlantic-harbour town of Horta. The island is compact and well known within Atlantic sailing routes for its sheltered marina and transatlantic stopovers.
The town of Horta, the volcanic Caldeira at the island’s centre, and the site of the Capelinhos eruption on the western side. Horta’s marina and waterfront cafés display a dense collection of yacht graffiti and sailing history, while trails around the caldera and coastal headlands offer views of neighbouring islands. The Capelinhos eruption added new coastline and left striking lunar-like terrain that is interpreted at a small visitor museum.
Faial’s geology and landscape have been shaped by multiple eruptions over the last centuries, most recently the 1957-58 Capelinhos event which created a new volcanic cone and extended the shoreline. The island’s economy and settlement pattern reflect its maritime role, agriculture, and tourism tied to sea access and natural sites.
Faial lies in the central Azores group; the main town is Horta, which hosts the island airport and ferry connections to other Azorean islands. The island sits west of São Miguel and north of Pico, forming part of a closely grouped cluster of volcanic islands.
- Capelinhos eruption: The 1957-58 Capelinhos eruption is the most recent major volcanic event on the island and is interpreted at a dedicated visitor centre near the eruption site.
- Horta marina: Horta's marina is a historic transatlantic stopover; yacht crews traditionally leave painted murals and messages at Peter Café Sport, making the harbour visually distinctive.
What to See #
- Horta: Horta town - the island's main harbour and service centre, known for its marina, yacht provisioning, and the Peter Café Sport murals left by transatlantic sailors.
- Caldeira: Caldeira - a broad volcanic caldera at the island's interior rim offering viewpoints and hiking routes around a volcanic crater approximately a few kilometres across.
- Capelinhos Volcano: Capelinhos Volcano and visitor centre - site of the 1957-58 eruption that added new land to the island and where an interpretation centre explains the eruption and geology.

Faial Island (Azores) is reached by air or ferry. Scheduled regional flights (SATA/Azores airlines) connect Horta Airport (HOR) on Faial with Lisbon and with other Azorean islands (Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, Pico, Terceira); the airport is a short drive (around 10-15 minutes) from Horta town. Regular ferries run between Horta and Madalena on neighboring Pico (roughly 20-30 minutes); Horta harbour is a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and the main ferry/boat terminals.
Tips for Visiting Faial Island #
- Take the early ferry from Pico or an early flight into Horta to maximize your day on Faial-Horta's marina and Peter Café Sport are best seen in the morning before visiting the Capelinhos volcanic area.
- Head to Capelinhos Volcano and its Visitor Centre for the best interpretation of the island's volcanic landscape; combine that with a rim walk of the central Caldeira for panoramic island views.
- Don't miss Horta marina's sailors' murals and Peter Café Sport-these are short, iconic stops right in town and are easiest to view when you arrive rather than at the end of a long day of hiking.
