Făgăraș Mountains
Mountains High mountain range in Romania's Southern Carpathians
The Făgăraș Mountains in Romania form a high ridge of the Southern Carpathians crossed by the Transfăgărășan road; hikers come for alpine ridges, glacial lakes and routes leading to Moldoveanu, Romania’s highest peak.
The Făgăraș Mountains are the highest segment of the Southern Carpathians in central Romania, containing Romania’s tallest peaks and extensive high-mountain terrain. Peaks such as Moldoveanu (2,544 m) and Negoiu (2,535 m) are principal attractions for climbers and hikers.
The range features sharp ridges, glacial cirques, alpine pastures, and numerous mountain lakes, with popular routes accessing high passes and summits. The Transfăgărășan road crosses the mountains and gives access to Balea Lake and alpine trailheads at elevations above 2,000 metres.
Historically used for pastoralism and more recently for recreation and alpine tourism, the Făgăraș are a focal point for multi-day trekking along the main ridge and for technical climbs on exposed sections. Mountain weather can be severe, and many routes require mountain experience outside the summer season.
Geographically the range lies between the historical regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, with the nearest regional centres including Sibiu to the west and Brașov to the east, and it forms a prominent highland spine through central Romania.
- Alpine conditions: The range contains Romania's highest peaks and extensive alpine terrain; mountain weather can change rapidly and routes are often snowbound outside the summer months.
- Road seasonality: The Transfăgărășan road provides seasonal vehicle access across the range but is typically closed in winter and early spring due to snow.
What to See #
- Moldoveanu Peak: Moldoveanu Peak is the highest summit in the range and in Romania at 2,544 metres, a primary objective for mountaineers.
- Negoiu Peak: Negoiu Peak, the second-highest in the Făgăraș group at 2,535 metres, is noted for steep ridges and alpine terrain favored by experienced hikers.
- Transfăgărășan and Balea Lake: The Transfăgărășan road crosses the range via the Balea Pass area and provides high-altitude access to glacial lakes such as Balea Lake at about 2,034 metres.
