Faʼaʼā Travel Guide
City City in French Polynesia, near Tahiti
On Tahiti’s west coast, Faʻaʻā handles international flights and the messy bustle of arrivals; travelers spill into Papeete’s municipal market, reef lagoons and surf breaks, pearl farms and road-trip routes toward waterfalls and volcanic ridges.
Why Visit Faʼaʼā? #
On the edge of Tahiti and close to Papeete’s port and airport, this town is often chosen for its practical access to island life and Polynesian culture. Visitors use it as a base for black-sand beaches, reef swims and quick trips into Papeete’s markets, where poisson cru and Tahitian crafts are on offer. Proximity to cultural events and easy transport make it useful for exploring Tahiti beyond the capital.

How to Get to Faʼaʼā
Faa'a is where Tahiti's international flights arrive - the airport is effectively in the town. Ground connections to Papeete (the capital) are short: taxis, airport shuttles and public buses provide the link for visitors.
Faa’a International Airport (PPT): Faa’a (Papeete) International Airport is the main airport for Tahiti and French Polynesia. It is located within the commune of Faa’a - you will typically arrive here when flying to Tahiti.
Other islands: Inter-island flights arrive at smaller airports on other Society Islands; travel between islands is by domestic plane or boat, connecting through Papeete where most onward ground transport to Faa’a or Papeete takes place.
Train: There is no rail network in Tahiti.
Bus / Public shuttle: Local buses (called ‘routières’ or Tahiti buses) and private shuttles connect Faa’a airport area with Papeete and other parts of the island. Airport taxis are available outside the terminal; public buses are cheaper but less frequent. A taxi from Faa’a airport to central Papeete typically takes 10-20 minutes depending on traffic; fares are commonly around 2,000-3,000 XPF to central Papeete.
How to Get Around Faʼaʼā #
Fa’aʻā is essentially a suburban/industrial commune adjacent to Papeʻete and contains Tahiti’s main airport; travel is usually by car or taxi and many visitors transit through Fa’aʻā en route to Papeʻete. Public buses run between Fa’aʻā and Papeʻete but frequency is limited compared with walking or taxi travel in town. If you plan to explore Tahiti, renting a car in Papeʻete or using organized transfers is most convenient.
