Expo Commemoration Park is a large public park and museum complex in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, built on the site of the 1970 World’s Exposition. It preserves several signature works from the fair and functions as a civic green space and cultural area.

The site is best known for the Tower of the Sun, a 70-metre sculptural landmark that dominates the park’s central plaza; the tower is one of the park’s most photographed features. The grounds also include broad lawns, walking routes and museum facilities, notably the National Museum of Ethnology, which brings ethnographic displays close to the former expo site.

The area was developed for and used as the Expo ‘70 grounds; after the fair the site was converted into a commemorative park and cultural precinct while several original artworks and pavilions were retained or repurposed. Over time museum facilities and visitor services were added to support exhibitions and events.

The park sits in Suita, north of central Osaka, on the city’s northern suburban fringe. It is roughly 15 kilometres from downtown Osaka and is served by the Osaka Monorail and local bus routes.

  • Expo '70 site: The park occupies the former site of Expo '70, the first World's Fair held in Japan, and retains several exhibition-era artworks and monuments.
  • Access: Closest public transit access is Banpaku-kinen-koen Station on the Osaka Monorail, making the park easy to reach from central Osaka.

What to See #

  • Tower of the Sun: A sculptural tower standing 70 metres tall by artist Tar4b Okamoto, located near the park's central plaza; the interior has been partially opened to the public for exhibitions about the 1970 exposition.
  • National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku): Japan's national ethnology museum located on the park grounds, housing comparative collections of world cultures and supporting academic research and exhibitions.
